The Nordic Guy Next Door’s Beard Care Tips

We all know someone with an awesome beard. What’s the secret? Or is there any special care put into it? From what I’ve been experiencing, men tend to go for a very low-key beauty regimen, so I checked up with a few “guys next door” to have them share their tips on how to maintain a great beard.

Marco – Yoga Teacher, Finland

«I’m rather lazy when it comes to beard care – I’ve never really used any products for my beard, I’ll just let it grow and when I think it’s too long, I’ll just shave it. I’ve been on floating a few times at Kallio Float, it has a bit of a spa feeling to it, and they have a beard oil I’ve tested – smells good and feels nice. That’s probably the only beauty product I know of other than shampoo!”

Beauty Editor’s note: Risu beard oils (the ones Marco tried out at Kallio Float) come in six different blends – one unscented and five scented with different ingredients to suit various beard and skin needs!

“I usually don’t use any beard care products except when I grow it longer (2-3 months or more). Then I feel a good beard oil helps moisture the beard and it gets a lot softer – I might use some beard wax as well. I have tried beard shampoo and conditioner as well, but in the long run I feel like it’s too many products to keep track of!

If you’re planning to grow your beard big, I guess the best tip is to be patient. I’m not the best person to give this advice ‘cause I never am! It might look a bit messy at times, and you want to touch it up, but if the goal is to grow it big then it’s best to leave it for a while and then shape it when it’s at the desired length. And unless you know what you’re doing, stop by a professional barbershop so you avoid a «beardcident» and have to end up shaving it all off.”

Niko – Student, Finland

“I’ve been using different beard oils, all from Bole, Zew and Dermosil. At the moment, I’m using my barber’s own beard oil Beardpark. I’m rather fond of this particular oil as it’s a bit thicker, which makes it easier to style the beard. The scent of beard oils is very important as it’s applied right under your nose. I have scissors and a trimmer that I use to style my beard and moustache myself, but I’ll gladly visit a barber once a month for beard care – not only is it very relaxing to get a nice massage, but you do look sharper with the clean edges.

I trim my moustache quite often and use wax to style it whenever I need to be more… presentable. It’s rather tricky to find a wax that’s not too hard when it dries and that come with a proper hold – as well as a nice scent. At the moment, I’m using a wax from Sisuman that I’m pretty pleased with.”

Beauty Editor’s note: The Sisuman wax is a natural formula with beeswax, lanolin, coconut oil and essential oils (Neroli & Eucalyptus) with a scent of Sisu Pastilles – to keep your moustache on point and smelling good.

“Previously, I was quite active and keen on maintaining the beard, and used to wax my moustache quite often. Nowadays, I don’t really put too much effort to it, at least not during the week. I care for my beard by first brushing it upwards – and looking like somewhat of a sea urchin – then straight down, cutting off any hair that stick out. Beard shampoos are good, but on a daily basis I don’t wash my beard with nothing other than water – too much washing with shampoo will strip the beard off its own oils, which makes it dry and frizzy.

I’ve been using a lot of Captain Fawcet’s products and they seem pretty good quality. At the moment, I’m using Mr Bear Family’s beard wax, which is convenient to style the beard with, without any flyaways. Beard oil works well at softening the beard if it’s of a more coarse type, and it also gives a bit of a darker shade to the beard.”

Beauty Editor’s note: Mr Bear Family’s beard balms help calm redness, irritation and dry skin, and are infused with four different scents worlds for your grooming pleasure.

“I do absolutely nothing to care for my beard except trimming it every once in a while! I just make sure that it doesn’t stick out on the sides, that the moustache doesn’t get too long and that the neck is clean.”

Beauty Editor’s Note: Some of our bearded friends have also recommended the ROKUA beard oil, which contains nourishing and softening oils, and comes in a light, airy scent, that fades after applying to give room for your own fragrance.

How do you take care of your beard? Are you the well-groomed type, or more of a wild one? Let us know!
