Danish Photographer Søren Solkær Turns His Lens From Singers to Starlings
After twenty years photographing everything from street artists to musical icons, Danish photographer Søren Solkær has turned his eyes to the sky. ‘Black Sun’ (out today) captures large murmerations of birds that Solkær has been documenting for many years. The work has already been shown in Amsterdam and LA, and it’s about to travel to Sydney and Tokyo.
Speaking about the project, Solkær says he always had a fascination for the phenomenon. “The starlings move as one unified organism that vigorously opposes any outside threat,” he explains. “It’s a strong visual expression that’s created, like that of an ink drawing or a calligraphic brushstroke. Shapes and black lines of condensation form within the swarm, resembling waves of interference or mathematical abstractions written across the horizon.”

Creating ‘Black Sun’ took Solkær to Holland, Italy, Britain and Spain, creating thousands of videos along the way. Responsible for iconic images of Amy Winehouse, Paul McCartney and Björk, it’s a different sort of globetrotting to the celebrity chasing he grew used to. A member of the Royal Danish Library and the National Portrait Collection, Solkær draws attention wherever he goes, and this body of work is captivating in a new way – it’s calming, mesmerising and otherworldly.
