Sweden’s First Floating Hotel
Picture this: an idyllic hotel complex hidden away in Småland’s forest, based around the idea of adventures in the wild; a unique mix of glamping, adventure travel and affordable luxury, where the goal isn’t just to experience nature but to remind ourselves that we’re all a part of it. The Adventure Village, surrounded by deep forests and sat along a lake, is made up of giant teepees, summer cottages and a hammock house on the mainland. Then there’s a tiny, private island where you and your partner can enjoy a romantic getaway at a secluded, 19th century cottage – think breakfast delivered by boat and stargazing under clear skies.
Finally, there’s Flotellet – a floating cottage complete with a kitchen, bathroom and a roof terrace, accessible by boat and conveniently set a couple of meters away from the land. But the cherry on top and my absolute favourite is Kajakhaket – a one-room floating hotel sat in the middle of the lake, accessible only by boat. The first hotel of this kind in Sweden, Kajakhaket gives you the chance to experience Swedish nature in a way it’s never been done before.
The concept is simple – a giant bed with a roof window and a glass wall, where you get to fall asleep to the sight of the open lake with stars and the moon for company. You can take a morning dip by practically jumping out of bed and straight into the lake. The porch is perfect for breakfast or conversations going long into the night. On a sunny day, it’s hard to tell where the surface of the lake stops and the sky begins – you’ll feel like you’re floating through a giant mirror. Ramoa provides kayaks, boats and canoes to hotel guests, so you can explore the lake and all its hidden treasures at your own pace.
There’s also a cafe serving breakfast, dinner and lunch on the shore, and you can also try out Ramkvilla Wardshus – a gorgeous, local restaurant serving fresh seafood, with more stunning views of the lake.
I visited Ramoa at the end of the summer, but it looks equally wonderful in autumn, when the leaves change colour and the morning sun suddenly starts casting long shadows, the smell of bonfires and mushrooms filling the air. And in winter, when the ice covers the lake and you can ice skate your way to the hotel. Follow Ramoa on Instagram for more nature inspiration, straight from the Swedish forest!
