Our Favourite: Nordic Bookstores
The ceremony of a bookshop is special. Bookshops are global hubs which marry different cultures, languages and peoples. They provide a sense of belonging in a world that can sometimes seem disconnected. When speaking to Jan Smith (co-founder of the English Bookshop in Uppsala), he quoted Philip Pullman in saying that “independent bookshops are the lantern bearers of civilisation”. In the search of your next read, we’ve picked a few Nordic bookshops to assist you.
The English Bookshop
“The English Bookshop,” states co-founder Jan Smith “was always a passion project.” And that passion? “Placing the right book in the right hand at the right moment.” With remarkable inventory and enthusiastic staff, coupled with exciting events in the shop, this Uppsala establishment is a book-lover’s haven. Awarded the Bookshop of the Year by the British Publisher’s Association in 2018 (handed only twice before to a bookshop outside the UK), this shop has an influence that transcends borders, while also being backed by a loyal and tight-knit community.
