Tom Dixon’s 24 Hours in Copenhagen
For many designers, the COVID-enforced ban on trade shows and other large-scale events put their creativity to a standstill. For British industrial designer Tom Dixon, the closing of big doors meant a smaller window of opportunity could open. To celebrate his brand’s long and lasting relationship with Scandinavia – both literal and aesthetical – Tom Dixon organised a “24hr in Copenhagen” series of events, where in a small, intimate way we could get to know some of his newest creations.
“The relationship between the UK and Scandinavia has been long, complex and sometimes bloody. The connection between Tom Dixon and the Nordic countries has always been warm and positive with the superior design culture of Denmark proving to be the optimal landscape to explain our design ideas.
”
Since Tom Dixon’s brand presence is strongly influenced by Scandinavian trends in furniture and interior design, the Nordics remain the brand’s key market. The exciting line-up of events opened with a press breakfast at an all-time favourite Atelier September in the heart of Copenhagen, where we gathered around the table to watch Tom give a personalised presentation of his latest accessory and furniture projects. Here are some of the ones that definitely stole our hearts:
FAT
Reclaiming fatness as a positive word? We’re all for it! Tom opened his presentation with this particular collection, designed with ‘humorous silhouettes’ and a ‘reductionist aesthetic. The round, chubby chairs and chic chais lonuges are made to hug your body, curvy or not. We’re completely in awe of this series, particularly the fat, doughnut- shaped lounge chairs – how comfortable do they look?
CORK
Keeping with the chunky theme, Tom Dixon utilises the traditional material that is cork in a new, future-friendly way. Rounded on the edges and sculptural, Dixon’s cork collection remains minimalist, while highlighting the superior qualities of cork: sound-absorbent, lightweight and waterproof, it is as amazing as it is underrated.
SWIRL
A bit wacky and far from what we’ve come to know and respect as the Scandinavian minimalism, comes the Swirl family of furniture and accessories. Based on cylindrical and geometric shapes, the collection’s main appeal is unexpected stacking and bold colour combinations. Need a bit of crazy in your rather plain home? Look no further.
PUCK
Flimsy flutes are a thing of the past – Tom Dixon, once more, explores sturdy and think, this time in the cocktail and glassware context. The entire Puck collection is based on round, tube-shaped stems and petri dish-like feet. Fragile? Honestly don’t think so. Powerful? Hell yes!
