Introducing: The Weird and Wonderful Sounds of ‘Whose Rules’
Over the past few months, artists have moved out of their offices and back into their houses, transforming sheds and garages into temporary studios. For 23-year-old Norwegian musician ‘Whose Rules’, an abandoned cabin on his parents’ sunflower farm has been his base not only for the past three months, but for the past three years. It’s from here that he’s produced Malarkey, his first EP, which is out today.
Inspired by the sounds of Mac DeMarco and Gus Dapperton, the title single landed him in the top five of Spotify’s ‘Fresh Finds’ playlist. Described as ‘fluttering’ by music magazine The Sound Sniffer, Whose Rules’ subsequent singles «We Might Ova and Dusty R&B, shared the same funky rhythms and guitar solos. Whose Rules says he came up with Malarkey’s low-key love ballad after hearing bass lines from the 80s. His other songs feature inspiration from his homie, Selmer.
With a promising career ahead of him, the Malarkey EP is the perfect opportunity for Whose Rules to indulge in his emerging sound. Taking inspiration from life as teenager, and from the nature surrounding his sunflower farm, he’s produced a sound that is at once distinctly Norwegian and universally accessible. Sway to the gentle rhythm, transfixed by the quality of production and vocals. One to watch, certainly! Listen to his new EP HERE, and let us know what you think.
