SFW AW21 – HOPE: Exploring Body and Space
Led by well-defined proportions and flowing materials, HOPE’s AW21 collection focuses on the interaction between the body and the garment, as a protection. HOPE is HOPE. No matter the season, the Swedish brand delivers its signature aesthetic, with a strong core around sharp tailoring, a palette of neutral colours and high-quality materials. Usually, the attention to detail is the cherry on top, but the AW21 collection takes another direction. Pushing the expression of minimalism further, the design is stripped down to only the essentials and refined to its purest form. The detail is still there, but it’s subtle, the handmade glass buttons, the discreet slits, the pleats on the wristband…
Shape and movement steal the spotlight. Fitted and precise lines coexist with loose and flowing silhouettes, a contrast that makes the collection visually dynamic and diverse. The choice of pure fabrics, such as wool, silky velvet, organza and satin, soften the seriousness that could transpire through a collection largely dominated by neat jackets and trousers. Though black, grey and white set the tone, sudden hints of bubblegum pink, pastel yellow and terracotta brown give life to the collection in an unexpected and playful way.
The same pieces are worn both by man and woman, which supports the brand’s approach to make the garments gender-neutral. Since 2017, HOPE has adopted a double size system, to encourage the exploration of the whole collection, instead of just one department.
I like the collection, some pieces really catch my eye, like the anthracite, checked suit paired with a crop-top – I would wear it right now. The collection is clean and stylish, casual and comfortable at the same time. As ‘chic, but not too much’ is our home mood for the foreseeable future, we’ll take it all.
