Our Favourite: Helsinki Fashion Week SS20 Designers
Helsinki Fashion Week took place in a 100% digital sphere earlier this month, and to commemorate the landmark event, we’ve compiled some of our favourite digital runway shows! Who’s your favourite?
Helena Bajaj–Larsen
Helena Bajaj–Larsen presented her futuristic collection in an even more futuristic, completely computer designed 3D ‘set’, featuring textile digitalisation by scotomalab. The half Indian, half Norwegian fashion designer sources her materials from ‘Khadi shops around India’, which are ‘hand–painted using acid and pigment dyes’, and you can truly see this influence in her newest collection for Helsinki Fashion Week.
She presented five incredible outfits in the short video, all marked with her distinctive acid print materials.
Tess Van Zalinge
Tess Van Zalinge, who presented her collection titled ‘Dutch Patchwork 2020’, opted for a light, delicate feel to both her digital runway and her collection. A heavenly, all–white armoire isn’t something new for Van Zalinge, whose previous collections rarely see her move away from white, dainty designs and patterns.
Tess showcased a collection of five looks, ranging from coordinating sets to full length gowns, all made from a sheer white patchwork material that is so iconic to her brand.
Mandali Mendrilla
Mandali Mendrilla showcased her namesake brand’s new 3D space collection in an underwater world, which ‘draws upon the concepts of space and dimensionality. By continuing to apply the Eastern science of Vastu architecture’, allowing the craft of ‘the sculptural couture garments and accessories’, Vastu science incorporates the principles of design and spatial geometry, which is seen in the various forms and shapes of the garments.
In an Atlantis inspired setting, and with five eclectic looks, the collection was full of structure and layered opulence, with pieces that move and flow like the water itself, and with prints inspired closely by nature.
NAYĖH
NAYĖH showed her collection of sustainable, eco-friendly coats for their Spring Summer 2020 presentation, with their digital show being set in an ancient Greece inspired stadium, amongst the clouds. The coats seamlessly matched the ethereal surroundings, showing us that NAYĖH coats look good on anyone, in any place.
Describing themselves as a brand that ‘embodies elegance and refined femininity’, NAYĖH delivered five fabulous coats on her digital runway, all of which are authentic to her functional, natural toned identity.
3MBASSY
Set in a contradictory mountainous lavender field, 3MBASSY showcased only one design – a striking dress – and are among only a handful of other designers to do this at Helsinki Fashion Week. The dress, called ‘Dahlia’, is reminiscent of the flower itself, with its big, dusky pink frills, and ruffles which embody the petals.
3MBASSY’s profile is all about combining zero waste clothing with digital technology, and, like Helsinki Fashion Week itself, endeavour to be a sustainable brand.
There was much creativity on display at this season’s Helsinki Fashion Week, and we can’t wait to see what designers do in the future with this new platform. Using a digital environment certainly opens up fashion designers to a world of possibilities, where money and resources are less of an issue, and almost anything is possible. Is this the new fashion future? Only time will tell.
