Our Favourite: Iceland Airwaves 2020 Acts

It can just be me that is missing festivals, live music and great bands. After most of this year’s concerts had been cancelled, Iceland Airwaves has become the last glimmer of hope on many people’s calendars. It’s a highlight of my year, and the line-up is as fantastic as always, so I thought i’d round-up my favourites that your must see in November.

Black Pumas

Black Pumas will not only be visiting Reykjavik, but Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm this year. This band from Texas are my absolute favourite, and their self-titled debut album (released last year) bagged them a Grammy nomination for ‘Best New Artist’. Their music fuses soul, rock, psychedelic and funk, giving you a fresh, unique sound that will have you hooked.

Daði Freyr

Daði was nominated as the unofficial winner of this year’s Eurovision contest by Icelanders, and his career has blown up since he released his infectious (no pun intended) single ‘Think About Things’.  He describes his music as “synth-heavy, feel-good, alternative dance-pop” and we definitely get the vibe. In November we will see him performing in a solo and full-band setup, and we can’t wait!

Metronomy

We probably don’t have to introduce you to Metronomy, as they have already released 6 albums, and have been on the top of many people’s favourite artists lists for a while. Hailing from the UK, and bouncing between electronic and pop, they have stuck to the same formula for the past 15 years, so you’ll still get to see the best of them in November.

Dry Cleaning

When a couple of friends are inspired to start a band after a karaoke night, it can only be called Dry Cleaning. This post-punk quartet wanted to make their music simple, direct and uncomplicated, but this doesn’t mean they’re afraid to step outside the box – like writing a song about Meghan Markle, when your relationship ends… Dry Cleaning have taken inspiration from 60s psych, funk and metal as well, I mix that I personally love. This is one of the bands you should not miss at Airwaves for sure!
