are you cleaning your face correctly?
According to research I have conducted amongst my female friends who wear make up nearly everyday, they are not sure if they are cleaning their face properly. It seems like most of us doesn’t realise our skin isn’t clean, even if it looks like it. No one is to blame, because it also took me years to discover the proper way of cleaning my skin, and I have to admit that I thought I knew what I was doing too. After wearing make up daily without a dedicated routine and struggling with acne for many years, I am finally on the path to implementing simple skincare rituals into my daily life. As a make up artist, I am very interested in skincare, as make up looks best on healthy skin, so here are my top tips and products for skin cleansing.
First thing is to get into your pores and get rid of the micro leftovers from your foundation and other products you’ve used. This step immediately changed my skin, as I was layering left-over product on my skin, and not letting it breathe. Sadly, your hands are not enough here, cause our fingers are only cleaning the surface of our skin. There are many types of face brushes on the market, with Foreo and Clarisonic selling some popular models, but you need to know what kind of brush is right for your skin.
These kind of brushes do take off a small layer of you skin, which makes them not suitable if you have sensitive skin. If we use a brush to often, it can leave your skin without its top protective layer, and can cause bacteria to spread easily, contributing further to problems like acne. So as not to damage your face, I would suggest using an extremely soft (preferably synthetic) brush, with high density of hair – you’ll find this in the makeup brush section in stores. I am using a brush from Korean brand Swanicoco, which is made especially for cleansing, and you can find a very similar brush from Icelandic brand Nola, if you’re in the Nordics.
Second of all, it is very important to take your time when it comes to cleansing. I know it can be frustrating when you think you’ve done the job, but believe me, it’s the most important step of your skincare regime. I recommend cleansing at least twice, when you have not had much product on your skin, and at least 3 times if you have had a full face of makeup on.
Last, but not least, remember to check if your cleansing products contains any harmful ingredients like SD alcohol, denatured alcohol, isopropyl alcohol or synthetic perfume. These sorts of alcohol substances are often used to make products cheaper, but can cause long term skin problems, such as acne and dry skin. We recommend checking out Icelandic brands BIOEFFECT, Skyn Iceland and Blue Lagoon Iceland for products that are good for skin and at great at their job!
