Marimekko – CPHFW SS22: An Iconic Summer
An empty warehouse, a grand piano, and bold and beautiful prints. What does this sound like? Marimekko’s SS22. Titled ‘New Folk’, the Finnish design house’s SS22 collection was accompanied by a solo, grand piano performance of ‘Gnossienne No. 1’. There was thought in this: an iconic, classical music piece, paired with the iconic Marimekko prints of SS22. This was the inauguration and first show for creative director Rebekka Bay. Expectations were high and Bay delivered!
Marimekko are best known for their prints and their ability to dig into the archive and constantly reinvent them in new and innovative ways, which only adds to how exemplary the brand is. The looseness of the pieces were further exemplified in how the models walked and roamed the warehouse, uninhibited and unlimited. Yet this collection was also strict and structured in its’ fabrics and textiles. The ‘Unikko’ print, born in 1964, has become synonymous with the brand and has consistently appeared over the years. Collection after collection, one never tires of an ‘Unikko’ appearance. Floral prints like this quintessential one were reinvented in light blue and white variations. Cozy knits featured curly detailing on the edges and despite the fact that Marimekko’s prints are bold on their own, they were mixed and matched with one another. In terms of this collection’s colour scheme, SS22 was more of an understated bold; greens, black, tan, and light orange.
There’s no denying that this collection is Marimekko through and through. SS22 is well-designed for all women, limitless in both form and function. Day to night, or for various occasions, the opportunities are endless. Despite new leadership, one would never know that there was a change. I absolutely adore Marimekko and I appreciate their devoted commitment to themselves and their DNA. With SS22, Marimekko remained loyal to both their designs and prints.
