Nicholas Nybro’s New Collection Celebrates the Reopening of the World
Out of the sadness and frustration that came out of the pandemic prohibiting social gatherings, Nicholas Nybro felt impelled to create his own kind of party; a glamorous collection of seven dresses, each named after one of his favourite disco divas. ‘When their music is playing, it’s impossible to stand still.’ Nicholas Nybro wants to make people smile and dance again, and I fell in love at first sight, wanting to dance the night away in each of the dresses. I had a chat with Nybro about his new collection and the inspiration behind it.
“I love wearing glitter and dancing, and unfortunately opportunities to do so have been sparse for the past year and a half. As the future was starting to look brighter and partying with your friends was a realistic hope, I was inspired to celebrate it with this mini collection.”
Amanda Lear
Gloria Gaynor
Nicholas named his collection ‘Party’ and it’s his way of paying all the upcoming parties a tribute, as he wanted to give people a chance to dress up again. Bold colours, sparkling textiles, playful silhouettes and loads of tulle is what you’ll find in this collection, and it definitely is not for the faint hearted! Nicholas Nybro is what i’d can call a ‘true tulle lover’, and has been working the material into his collections for several years.
In the design process for ‘Party’, Nybro decided to challenge himself and use tulle in ways he has never done before, and it’s out of these experiments that the dresses were born. The voluminous, joyous shapes are a result of his love for playing with materials and their properties. ‘Apart from tulle, I have used everything from rich silks to cheap plastics. I love using cheap and tacky materials and treating them as if they are the most expensive and precious silks. It is when you play with conventions that the magic happens.’ Lastly, Nicholas Nybro decided that he wouldn’t buy any new materials for this collection, but instead use what he had in his studio. The only things which are new are buttons, making this collection both sustainable AND chic!
“I love when my designs are over the top and in recent years I have only created one of a kind. As a designer I like the idea of my clients wearing something that is truly unique.”
Grace Jones
Donna Summer
Nybro’s brand ethos is rooted in his personality, ‘Years ago I discovered that the strength of my brand is me as a person, rather than the collections that I make’. He is a very versatile artist, who not only works in fashion design, but also in theatre production, and with his drag sisters as Veninderne. When I asked about his design DNA he replied, ‘My designs often get the label ‘show pieces’ but I don’t think that they are. They are merely a reflection of how I design. I have never really liked the idea of show pieces, you shouldn’t make wild pieces to cover an otherwise boring collection.’ We couldn’t agree more!
“It is important to me that I have fun when I work, regardless of it being in fashion, theatre, art, or something completely different. I need to have fun and I love telling stories through my work.”
Chaka Khan
Diana Ross
The dresses are currently for sale at Sabine Poupinel boutique in Copenhagen, and all pieces are one-of-a-kind, so get your hands on them quickly! You can also keep up to date with Nicholas’ work via his Instagram.
