Talk About SYD: Fighting Period Poverty
The Swedish sanitary products brand Syd goes beyond your regular tampons and pads from the corner shop – they are here to fight for equality and make a change for women around the world stricken by period poverty.
Did you know that 62 million young women do not go to school due to menstruation? You might ask why. The poor sanitary conditions hinder them from handling their period at school, which leads to girls skipping school to stay at home and eventually drop out of school altogether. The stigma and outdated view of menstruation make this topic not discussed and prioritized, and therefore this issue stands in the way of women’s opportunity for gender equality. Syd’s goal is to change all that and open the discussion around the subject.
Together with charity organisation Rädda Barnen, Syd has started a project at selected schools in the Ivory Coast. “We ensure that there are the sanitary conditions needed for students to be able to take care of their menstruation in school, such as building new and safe toilets, and that everyone who needs has access to free menstrual protection. At the same time, we work with several different initiatives to change society’s view of menstruation and to combat the shame and stigma that remains. Men should never stand in the way of opportunities or success.” For every bag of Syd products you buy, you make it possible for a young woman in the Ivory Coast to go to school during her period, and we are here for that!
Menstruation should not be linked to shame or discrimination, as it is totally and completely natural. Whether you are forced to stay home from school or feel that you have to hide a tampon in your shirt sleeve on the way to the toilet, Syd wants to normalize and change the shameful image of menstruation that many have by giving extra attention to their chic and stylish packaging. We are so in love with the design that we might have it as a decoration piece at home!
Syd offers tampons, sanitary pads and liners made from 100% organic cotton. The reason you should always choose 100% organic cotton pads (especially if you have sensitive skin) is that most menstrual pads out there contain plastic, perfume, and other synthetic fibres that can cause irritation and allergies. Organic cotton pads are safer and much softer against the skin.To make your menstruation experience easy and fuss-free, Syd offers flexible refill subscriptions sent directly to your doorstep- now you have something to unbox every month.
