The Witchery CPH – Skinmalism and Circular Beauty
The Witchery are a Danish up and coming beauty brand, aiming to challenge how cosmetics are produced. Embracing the sustainability concept all the way, The Witchery produces skincare products from a combination of by-products of EU farming and local sustainable plants. They packaging is made from recycled cardboard, and the products themselves are packaged in seagrass from the shores of Mön (an island in South-Eastern Denmark) to shield the bottles during shipping – brilliant!
Their skincare formulations are simple and unprocessed, just how we like it. As EU regulations for farming are very strict, both quality and ethics are being insured in their production process – EU chemical and cosmetic regulations are the strictest in the world, so you and your skin will be safe when using products containing ingredients from the region. A note for sensitive noses – as the ingredients are unprocessed, the oils come with their natural seed oil scent, which means they won’t noses which are sensitive to fragrance.
“Witches were the first free women, doctors, entrepreneurs and beauticians. They used what was available on their doorstep. They loved nature. We want to do just that.”
The Witchery have a very interesting selection of products, which utilise everyday vegetables such as broccoli, kale and beets – these vegetables might not be the most popular on our plates, but your skin will love them! Take a look at some of my favourite products to get started:
Plum Seed Face Oil
Rich in polyphenols (plant-based micronutrients), plum seed oil is very beneficial for healing skin from UV damage, helping to get rid of pigmentation spots, fine lines and plumpen dry skin. This rich beauty oil comes with a lovely marzipan-like scent, is deeply moisturising (due to its high levels of fatty acids) and is perfect for calming any skin irritations. A great choice for dry or mature skin!
Lavender Hydrosol
Perfect for soothing your skin and relaxing your mind, hydrosols have similar benefits to essential oils, but as it is distilled, they are safe to spritz directly onto your skin. This hydrosol, soothes irritations (redness and inflammation), works as a sebum regulator and helps your skin keep itself balanced.
Lavender can help reduce insomnia and anxiety, the perfect hydrosol for stressful times (my best friend until the pandemic is over) . Keep this on your desk/in your locker for daytime use, and apply to your pillow or hair at nigh time for a soothing sleep.
NOTE: The spritz has a wide range and is quite, so use from a distance!
Strawberry Seed Face Oil
Strawberry seed oil is one of the most sustainable oils, as it is made from leftover seeds from jam and juice manufacturing. The antioxidant rich oil is light on your skin and resembles a dry oil, so is perfect for wearing under makeup. It brightens your skin, evens out pigmentation, and has a natural UV factor of 6 – your’ll still need to use a higher SPF during the day in addition.
The brand are also in the process of making a VERY exciting sun-kissed tint oil and a body oil made from apple seeds. If you’re not sure which product to try, or want to sample a few, you can buy a skincare set suited to your skin’s needs. Another thing to note, is that because the ingredients they use are unrefined and unprocessed, if you have sensitive skin, you may want to start by blending the product into your basic cream or oil, or do a patch test on your inner arm if you are uncertain.
