What is creativity to you?

I think creativity is a very wide concept. Perhaps it’s about the ability to liberate oneself from established perspectives.

What’s your favourite part of the creative process?

It really depends on what I’m writing. For example, when I wrote Time, I really enjoyed shaping my own limitations. The concept of my piece was that I would only use one word as the text for the choir to sing, and I translated that word into 104 languages… the different languages created a pallet of sounds. That restraint I initially shaped created a massive creative force.

When the last time you laughed?

Every day

What was the last text message you sent?

‘hahahaha’

What inspires you?

Sounds and music in general. Sometimes I see some visual arts and get a sense of how the visual would be projected if it were in the mediums of sound and music.

Composers provide a contrasting way of living and thinking in a society that’s encouraging shorter processes.

Who do you look up to?

Artists like Richard Serra are really important. Author Boris Vian and composers like Scelsi… also my sister Hanna who is a doctor in economics and really cool!

What do you think when you hear the word ‘happiness’?

People are obsessed with happiness. Maybe people should start to enjoy sadness, then happiness will feel real.

What do you feel before getting on stage?

Like I’m a deer trying to cross a highway, knowing I’ll be hit by a hard and heavy truck. Scared, in other words.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

On my way to a live premiere. God, I miss live music!
