Fischersund: Immerse Yourself in Icelandic Nature Through Handcrafted Fragrances and Sensory Experiences
Located in the heart of downtown Reykjavik, Iceland’s newest perfumery Fischersund, provides a combination of euphoria, comfort, and nostalgia. Run by siblings Jónsi (of Sigur Rós) Lilja, Inga Birgis and Rósa, with the help of various skilled family members and friends, Fischersund exists at the intersection of retail, art and design, with no detail left unturned. From their natural, locally manufactured and sourced fragrances, beauty products and homewear to their unique, in-store olfactory-based exhibition and tours, there is so much more to the brand than just producing a nice perfume.
At the centre of their product offering and the store experience are the brand’s handmade perfumes. Crafted by Jónsi – the brand’s ‘nose’ – each fragrance has complex but familiar references that stem from his favourite memories, from freshly cut grass to stolen rhubarb, and some more uniquely Icelandic ones, like burning telegraph poles (from a fire) and salted liquorice. It’s these unique smells and exceptional attention to detail (the store’s interior and product packaging are all crafted by the siblings’ father and uncle) that make the process of finding your fragrance and wearing it truly special. From the moment you step in the beautiful, little store – which was once Jónsi’s music studio – you are welcomed by music inspired by the ingredients and installations that envelop and educate you on the history of the ingredients. There’s even a hidden video installation from the Inga, which you should not miss.
Almost everything you see in the store is for sale, from the art on the walls, to the music you hear – nothing is there just to fill a space. To start your Fischersund experience, I recommend their No.23 fragrance, a deep mix of smokey tobacco, black pepper and anise seed combined with Icelandic sitka spruce. The fragrance is powerful, but familiar, and lingers at the perfect pace throughout the day. But don’t just stop at perfume, because some of Fischersund’s most popular products come in the form of candles and incense cones, which move the nostalgic, comforting fragrances from your body to your home, creating the perfect atmosphere.
In my opinion, the best way to experience Fischersund’s story and their products is in-person at their store on Fischersund 3, but if you can’t make it to Reykjavik just yet, you can shop all their products online where they offer worldwide shipping. Make sure to keep an eye out for their seasonal exclusives, including their newest collaboration with local, outdoor wear favourites 66° North, and use our exclusive code ‘NORDICMAG’ to receive 15% OFF your order!
