3 steps to Avoid Frizzy Hair

As if this whole year hasn’t felt surreal enough, we can’t quite believe that last Wednesday marked only 100 days until Christmas! Time wise, it may not feel like we are fast approaching the colder season, however, acting as a stern reminder is the annual visitor that doesn’t quite reach the list of winter wonders we are looking forward to: frizzy hair.

As the temperature dips, the dryness of our hair is caused by the lack of humidity in the air, which is unfortunately something we can’t change. This often leaves us struggling to hide the symptoms of frizzy hair, rather than tackling the root cause. Not to worry though, us Nordic beauty lovers are no strangers to the impact that harsh winter weather has on our hair, and have compiled a few tips for fighting the frizz!

1. Choose the correct products

Moisture is the number one remedy for frizzy hair, so we recommend opting for SLS (sodium laureth sulfate) and paraben-free shampoos and conditioners, that have a high consistency of a humectant called glycerin, which penetrates the hair and hydrates it from the inside. It also creates a protective coat around the hair strands, to help lock in moisture without creating build-up, unlike the plastic-y polymers called silicones that are often used to combat frizz. Sulfates on the other hand are known to strip your hair from hydration, so it’s definitely a good idea to turn towards certified organic hair brands such as those from Finnish beauty and food brand Urtekram. We recommend their Soothing Lavender shampoo and conditioner, that are packed with purely plant-based glycerin!

2. Avoid friction

In fact, frizziness occurs when your hair is dry and lacking moisture, causing the outer layer of the cuticle to open up and seek moisture from the air. As the cuticle is already in a fragile, roughed up state, avoiding further friction is a must – day-to-day activities such as brushing, towel-drying, and protection (or lack there of) of your hair while you sleep, are now under the microscope. First things first, use a hairbrush that is specifically designed for hair that’s in a fragile state. A great option is Björn Axen’s Gentle Detangling Brush For Fine Hair, or alternatively, you can use a wide tooth comb, because less bristles means less friction. Secondly, always dry your hair in a towel turban to avoid friction frizz – you can also swap your towel for a microfibre towel to be safe. And finally, ditch your cotton pillowcase for a silk pillowcase or cover your crown in a silk bonnet overnight.

3. Decrease the imbalance in temperature

Unfortunately, we cannot control the weather, but there are some steps we can take to reduce the moisture stripping effects that moving between the warm indoors and freezing cold outdoors has. Remembering to cover your hair with a scarf or hat, to protect it from the elements. It may also be a good idea to tie your hair up while having to face the cold wind. You can also turn down the temperature in the shower from hot to lukewarm, will help smooth down your hair, and is an easy fix. Excessively hot water can cause your hair cuticle to weaken and dry out, resulting in your hair needing more moisture.

These 3 steps are easy to follow, but make a big difference. Give them a try, and show tag us in the results on Instagram!
