Contradictive Design Graduation Project by Studio Vaughn Henry
As a graduating masters student from the Konstfack University of Arts, Craft and Design in Sweden, Andrew “Vaughn Henry” Watts presented his final furniture exploration project – Contradictive Design. In times where everything is out of the ordinary, design students have had to adjust and display their theses via online methods. Whether it is through images, virtual displays, or videos, we should not let these amazing newly graduated designers go unnoticed.
The Contradictive Design project is a combination of research from the making of a product, furniture design, and production – with an aim towards making a positive environmental impact with the final product. The end design includes pieces made from aluminum, fiberglass, wool, and vinyl.
“„The importance of highlighting the contradictory details that these materials carry can be attributed to the modern context of production. The ability to produce objects with an increasingly large physical disconnection between thinkers and makers allows a diluted sense of responsibility.“ ”
The designer focuses on getting to know the core of the material before deciding on a design. That way, he can understand the material in the deepest way possible and see it in a more sustainable way. Designers most often have the biggest dilemmas when it comes to choosing materials, because of the impact they can have on the world.
Vaugh Henry’s pieces are definitely attention-grabbers and would be beautiful additions to a quiet space. I can just imagine myself with my Sunday morning coffee, sitting in that soft, bright blue chair. Even though the “rough” sofa does not awaken the same vision, it would still make a beautiful addition to any Scandinavian home.
Seeing the impressive work of emerging furniture designers and their consideration for sustainability, really gives you a more peaceful look towards their designs. Knowing that the pieces in your home are bringing us closer towards a „cleaner“ design world, should make everyone feel convinced.
