CPHFW AW19: Munthe – True Love or Just A Quickie ?

Munthe’s fashion shows always take place in large halls, to fit the large audience that the brand’s aesthetics bring in, and it was no exception for the AW19 show – the huge crowd consisted of women of all ages, with very different personal styles. Big 3D triangles made of grey mirror had been installed on the catwalk, which everyone used to take the obligatory show selfie in, ofcourse.

Munthe introduced a large variety of wearable items, and remained true to her brand by offering a commercial yet fashionable collection. The collection included many practical items such as large bags – the type that has room for EVERYTHING – chunky and warming knits (we need Look 38’s jumper ASAP), to wear under your checked trenchcoat on those exra cold days, and bucket hats to keep those precious heads warm. There were coats and jackets for all occasions, making it easy for the every day woman to stay dry and warm in whatever the Nordic weather. Flowy silk dresses for the more formal evening wear were also provided, as well as wide-legged trousers and oversized shirts for a more relaxed elegance. We also loved the sexy leather pants and distorted vinyl coats, which bought a wonderful contrast to the knitwear and sleek bottoms.

Shades of brown dominated on the runway, binding the different looks together. We were thrilled by the wonderful baby blue that appeared on some of the looks – a refreshing tone that could light the dark Scandinavian winter up a little. However we were missing a clear vision – there were so many different silhouettes, textures, colors and patterns going on, that it did not feel like a true collection. We got lost in the amounts of prints that were introduced, leaving us feeling like quantity was more of the game. There was no time to fall in love with the lovely checks and the stripes, before the show had moved on to something else – there was a lot to love, and it was almost too overwhelming.

Overall this was a beautiful collection, and it felt easy to picture oneself wearing almost everything from it. Who wouldn’t love to go grocery shopping wearing one of the amazing coats, while toting one of the humongous bags!? With that said, we felt a lack of cohesiveness, and would have loved to have seen more of less, to be able to develop that deep and unique love for the beautiful items from the AW19 collection. Is there such a thing as too much love?
