CPHFW AW19: Les Deux – A New Beginning For Menswear and an End to Regime

The fall of regime and a celebration of creative freedom were the main inspirations for the Les Deux’s new collection. Prompted by a culturally significant moment in history – the fall of Berlin Wall in 1989 – the brand chose to explore new possibilities in menswear with timeless 90’s influences.

French-named, Danish-made and Berlin-inspired, Les Deux seemingly consists of clashing style contradictions. But, brought together, these clashes allow a classic menswear collection to be seen through the prism of different cultural traditions and values.

The French flair for effortless elegance manifested itself through the canvas of grey and black turtlenecks, which were both dressed up and down, with tailored checked blazers and denim jackets. The Danes’ penchant for functional design and carefully selected accessories became obvious with the first sight of a man bag, designed with durable forest green corduroy and masculine hardware, it’s a practical addition hopefully not only Danish men will be drawn towards.

Finally – the main plot of Les Deux’s narrative – the post-communist Berlin crowd. Contrasting elements of the collection, such as the flashy tangerine jacket and a humble military coat, reflect the much-awaited end to the East and West divide. The events of 1989 enabled young men to let go of fear and oppression, and replace them with progression and hopefulness.

Les Deux

“For each collection we’re inspired by an event, a special time in history or a community. We focus on the good things happening in the world and we are inspired by a huge diversity of people. Berlin, after the wall fell, is the perfect example of diversity and love, the effects of which can be seen in our collection.” – The founders of Les Deux

With their Un Nouveau Départ (French for New Beginning) offering, full of vibrant yellow and reimagined classics, Les Deux encourage the modern man to wear emotions and express personality through their clothing. The fallen breeze blocks scattered across the catwalk at the transformed factory location served as a reminder of this. We are not constricted by rules or boundaries and everyday fashion should reflect that.
