Nordic News – March 2017

Spring has arrived (if we ignore the snow that fell in Stockholm on Wednesday), and I think a few of us at NSM are suffering major fashion week withdrawal. But, Iceland’s DesignMarch came and gave us inspiring design talks, exciting fashion shows and exhibitions galore, and that has definitely satisfied our hunger. As well as talks, fashion shows and general Nordic design crushing, we celebrated International Women’s Day in all its’ glory, had some stunning editorials for you AND Zara Larsson album news, just in case you missed it…

  • So, if you were living under a rock for the past month, or maybe even year, you may not have heard that Zara Larsson is amazing and her debut album is now OUT. ‘So Good’ is SO GOOD and so worth the wait, and we have a track-by-track run through for you, so step this way!
  • With the arrival of Spring comes Spring cleaning, so we’ve compiled some useful tips and inspiration for Scandi bedroom perfection and we think you’ll love them.
  • International Women’s Day was a grand celebration of women’s power, achievements and all-round awesomeness here at Nordic Style Mag, and we championed many including House of Dagmar for their Week of Women and also our 5 favourite Nordic female fashion designers.
  • The stunning editorial ‘I Dream Away’ brings oceans, skies and metallics together in a beautiful setting. Shot by Julia Shashkina, it’s one of our favourites.

  • Páll Stefánsson makes works of art. Whether of landscapes in Iceland or portraits, we love them. The colours, textures and shapes are mesmerising and make it hard to believe that what’s in his photos are real and not a far off dream land. Check out our round-up of our favourite of his photos from the last 12 months in Iceland and be prepared to be transported into a wonderland of beauty.
  • DesignMarch went too fast for our liking, and we miss it already but are now full of design inspiration. Held at Reykjavík’s beautiful Harpa conference centre, DesignTalks is a series of discussions, panels and presentations and this year’s theme was ‘Brut Nature’ – exploring mankind’s connection with nature. With talks by Paul Bennett of National Geographic, architect Anna María Bogadóttir and Alexander Taylor of ADIDAS to name but a few, we loved the series of inspiring hosts and cannot wait for next year!
  • We also have a stunning Spring menswear editorial for you shot by Eivind Hamran which will make you wish for those longer days and golden sunsets to arrive quicker and stay for longer.
  • In running with DesignMarch was Reykjavik’s (hopefully annual) Fashion Festival! Collections were shown by Anita Hirklekar, Another Creation, Magnea and Cintamani which we loved. But, our ultimate favourite was by Inklaw who made us all want to be a part of their cool gang. We loved it for their untraditional catwalk arrangement (more like a conner than a runway), attention-grabbing attire and also the fact that it was not just a fashion collection, but a lifestyle and – above all – an attitude.
