15 Words You Need to Know

Here are some of the words and phrases that everyone should know, a little bit of fun and a little bit of seriousness.

GRL PWR – Short for Girl Power, which is what this day is all about. Shoutout to all girls!

Consent – This word is important for everyone. Especially when it comes to sex. People (and mostly guys) must know that no means no.

Non-binary – Is this a new term for you? Yikes, better late than never. But there is more to genders than man and woman. Look it up.

Transmisogyny – Is a combination of transphobia (hatred of transgender people) and misogyny (hatred of women and feminine attributes).

Intersectionality – Is the belief that everyone should be included in feminism, not just the middle-class, white women who usually represent the movement in the media.

Pinkwashing – When companies (and politicians) use HBTQ+ or breast cancer awareness as marketing tools when the only goal is to sell products or services.

Patriarchy – A society ruled for and by men.

Kyriarchy – Kyriarchy is a social system (or group of social systems) that is constructed through oppression and domination. It’s essentially a broader term than patriarchy and encompasses oppression from all privileged groups.

Queen B – Now, you may think that this is Beyoncé’s middle name. But in fact, y’all are queens running the world and without you it wouldn’t function.

Who run the world? – This question can have two possible answers. Sadly, if you look at the current political landscape of our planet you might think ‘hm, is it Donald Trump or Vladimir Putin, not sure right now‘. Wrong. The answer is girls. Just girls.  *inserts gif of Beyoncé*
