DesignMarch 2016 | Day 1

The NordicStyleMag team are off to DesignMarch 2016 in Reykjavik, Iceland. Today marks the eight time this wonderful festival takes place and it’s our favourite time of the year. With the next days being packed with different events, exhibitions, performances & collaborations, we head for the streets of Reykjavik to find some Nordic inspiration and get a hint of what the various designers have been up to this year.

Day 1 – Wednesday March 9th, was a cool mixture of events, openings, tasty wine and curious visitors. We truly admire the immense talent that lies in the Icelandic population to constantly push for new ways of collaborating, creating & visualising ideas.

Here are some of yesterday’s favourites…

Installation “Upproot / Take root?” is the visually captivating work by Landscape planning students from the Agricultural University of Iceland. The idea behind the piece is to exhibit what is usually hidden in everyday life, showcased in the form of a symbolic floating tree with its life-giving roots on display. Material used is a variety of recycled and colourful plastics.

Goldsmith, Edda Bergsteinsdóttir of SEB Jewellery, teamed up with clothing store GK Reykjavik to display her sharp & minimalistic jewellery line “SEB Animals”. The pieces are beautifully crafted in geometric style with organic animal shapes, making for a simplistic yet powerful statement.

Jewellery and design store Aurum participated in DesignMarch with vibrant exhibitions by various artists, one in particular which stood out was “Chemical Compound”. A infused collaboration with textiles, jewellery and print by Aurum, the Textiles department of the Reykjavik School of Visual Arts and Textílprentun Íslands. The students have crafted four digital prints inspired by the hooves of Greenlandic Reindeers showcasing soft & dramatic lines.

Jewellery designer, Guðbjörg Kr. Ingvarsdóttir, was inspired by the Greenlandic polar bears’ eyes and paws in her latest work “Nanook”.  The collection evokes the delicate movement of the bear across thin ice making for fragile lines, classic cuts and striking pieces.

1+1+1 is an experimental collaboration between designers from three Nordic countries – Hugdetta from Iceland, Petra Lilja from Sweden and Aalto+Aalto from Finland. The project examines and reimagines objects by having each studio design an object consisting of three distinct parts and then mixing the parts up into unpredictable combinations – a total of 27 possible.

At Spark Design Space, the group introduced their fourth product line (candleholders!) as well as their previous collection of mirrors from Stockholm Design Week 2016 and cabinets from the Helsinki Design Week 2015.

“Kyrrið / Still”. This magical collaborating between fashion designer, Sif Baldursdóttir, from Kyrja and artist, Laufey Jónsdóttir, was a clear favourite from yesterday’s outings. The two visionaries presented a cool and simplistic showcase at Studio Gallery Hverfisgata 71a. The grafted sketches featured 3D-like visions of Kyrja’s S/S16 collection, which were swinging on chains from the concrete ceiling with a contrasting lightness created with soft materials and up-scale cuts.
