5 Nordic Superfoods for the Skin

The lines between beauty, health and wellness are so blurred these days that the terms are almost one and the same. To be beautiful is to be healthy, and to be healthy is to be beautiful. Nordic superfoods might not always get as much global attention as the more exotic ones, but that doesn’t mean the Northern Hemisphere doesn’t have natural health-promoting and beautifying super ingredients to offer.

Blueberry

The Northern forests are full of wild bilberries, the Nordic version of blueberries, and they’re more than a delicious summertime snack. Bilberries are full of nutrients, antioxidants and flavonoids, which gives them the status of a superberry. When it comes to beauty, the high level of antioxidants in the berries protect against cell-damaging free radicals. Feed your skin with bilberries to soak in nutrients, rejuvenate your skin, and protect it against aging.

Birch Sap

During the spring, birch trees produce a syrup-like liquid, which is rich in minerals, vitamins, proteins and amino acids. This is known as birch sap and it’s is one of the most trending Nordic superfoods on this list.  Birch sap has been used as a traditional juice in Northern Europe for centuries, and because of its restorative and detoxifying benefits, it has lately become especially popular in the juicing industry. For beauty, it has properties that energize the skin, moisturize the skin, and protect skin cells. Many natural cosmetic brands also consider it effective for clearing skin conditions like acne and eczema.

Chaga Mushroom

Chaga is a dark, hard mushroom, which grows on trees in the Northern Hemisphere and has been used in folk medicine for centuries. It’s traditionally taken internally as a tea, and it contains vitamins, pantothenic acid, flavonoids, minerals, and enzymes. Like birch sap, chaga can help treat skin problems like rashes, acne and eczema. It also promotes the firmness and elasticity of skin, making it great for anti-aging purposes.

Sea Buckthorn

Though sea buckthorn berries are known to originate from the Himalayas, they grow in abundance in the North. Used in ancient Chinese medicine as well as traditional North European cuisine, the berries contain high levels of vitamin C as well as high amounts of protein, fibre, antioxidants and minerals. For your skin, sea buckthorn can help reduce redness and inflammation, protect skin cells from impurities in the air (which in turn keeps your skin youthful and firm), and hydrate as well as nourish skin to bring a healthy glow.

Lingonberry

A staple of traditional Scandinavian cuisine, lingonberry is #5 of the Nordic superfoods. The berries aren’t as sweet as blueberries, but they are high in plant polyphenols and contain antioxidants, vitamins, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Lingonberry seed oil is used externally as food for the skin, because of its anti-aging effects and ability to promote a natural glow by hydrating the skin.

When eaten, these foods can help provide an essential foundation for clear, glowing and youthful skin from within, but it’s good to remember that what you put on is as important as what you put in. Natural skin care products are always the better way to go!
