Viveca Sten – Swedish Nordic Noir author

After being introduced to my first Nordic Noir author to watch for 2015, I was delighted when I was brought a deserving second author who is building momentum on the literary scene.

Viveca Sten is a Nordic Noir author from Sweden who is certainly on the right track to becoming an author who is engaging people with her books.

Who is Viveca Sten

Viveca is a highly successful business woman, mother and writer who has managed to blend her three talents with ease into a lasting career. Viveca for many years was regarded with high praise in her role as a lawyer, this combined with her role as a humanitarian for the Red Cross Centre for Tortured Refugees means that she has an impassioned stance for her characters as she builds the crime storylines.

As Viveca’s talent for writing took off she decided to step back from her law career and focus fully on what has become triumphant writing vocation.

She has been likened to Camilla Lackberg with having a successful crime writing career running parallel with other just as triumphant ventures but not having any adverse consequences for her writing.

Viveca also has put her family holiday destination of Sandhamn on the map just like Camilla did for Fjallbacka but their writing styles are different and it is in this right that Viveca is going from strength to strength.

Viveca started out by writing non-crime fiction, but the Nordic Noir pull was too great and she took the plunge into the ever popular genre which has seen some of her books turned into a TV series which has seen viewers of up to 1.7 million viewers per episode.

Crime series novels

The island of Sandhamn can be found nestled in the Stockholm Archipelago, with only 120 Islanders this number is increased in the summer time by up to 3000 tourists.

This has given Viveca much scope to play with as the comings and goings of different people onto a small island can bring many scenarios of holiday relations, strangers within the midst of the locals and unknown meetings.

The first five books which can be found in the Sandhamn crime series have been made into a popular TV series staring Jakob Cedergren, Alexandra Rapaport and Anki Liden.

The series has been broadcast around Europe making Viveca Sten a household name.

From Still Waters up until In Harms way, Viveca’s novels are gritty, compelling and cleverly written. We are indulged by the dark nordic background, relevant and constant characters who become unravelled to us as the series goes on and crimes which keep us reading at a fast pace to keep up with the different directions the writer takes us.

With a very busy year ahead for Viveca Sten I was very lucky to grab a few moments with her for her answer some of my questions and to introduce you to another top nordic author for 2015.

Where do you get your inspiration from for each book and the characters?

When I began writing, I wanted to put my favourite place on earth as the centre of my stories – the small island of Sandhamn in the Stockholm archipelago where only 90 people live in the winter but 100 000 tourists visit in the summer.
My family have spent all their summers on Sandhamn  for almost a hundred years – which is why my crime novels take place on this tiny spot. There is something fascinating about the contrast between this idyllic summer paradise and the notion that evil lurks in the shadows …

Nordic Noir is such a huge genre to be in right now. Was it your intended choice to write about crime or did your writing just take you along that route?

I have always enjoyed crime novels, maybe it is because I am a lawyer myself. When I decided to write a book of fiction after several non-fiction legal books, it seemed to be the natural thing to do.

Sweden is one of the nations at the forefront of Scandicrime. Why do you think Swedish authors are so successful with writing crime novels?

I am asked this question all the time, but I find it impossible to give a straight answer. Maybe it has something to do with the long dark season…? To be fair, many of the Swedish writers owe a large debut of gratitude to both Stieg Larsson and Henning Mankell who acted as trailblazers and opened the doors to international success for us. Without them, I doubt if we would have had the same chances to be published in other countries.

You have sold your books worldwide and some of them have been made into a TV series. What are your intentions for 2015 work wise?

It is going to be a very busy year!

My first book in English will be published by Amazon in September which is very exciting. My cookbook from the archipelago is also being published in German and English and I have major releases in Germany (my sixth book) and France (my third book) as well as several other countries. Furthermore, I am writing on my eighth crime novel in the series which is due to be published in Sweden in October. A number of literary festivals and visits to book fairs abroad have also been added to my schedule, so I certainly know how to fill my time in the coming year (laughter).
