Christmas presents for family and friends should be unique and special. So why not leave the beaten tracks and go Christmas shopping in an unusual environment like the Faroe Islands? Rannvá Helenudóttir, the woman behind the new Faroese electronic music project HULDA, reveals which shops are worth visiting.
Öström, Skálatrøð 18, 100 Tórshavn
Öström is an old industrial house – built by a Swedish man with the name Öström – which has undergone a rapid change during the recent years. Today, Öström is regarded as one of the best places in the country to buy original Faroese handicrafts. I appreciate that Öström has a wide range of small independent designers and that there’s always something new and exciting to be found – especially now during the time before Christmas.
Guðrun & Guðrun, Niels Finsensgøta, 100 Tórshavn
Guðrun & Guðrun is a knitwear company specialized in hand-knit. The brand was founded by two Faroese women, Guðrun Ludvig and Guðrun Rógvadóttir. I really like to visit their store in the pedestrian precinct of Tórshavn because Guðrun & Guðrun has wonderful, smart and beautiful clothes and their design is really cool – perfect when looking for a great Christmas gift.

Maria Poulsen Búnýti, Tórsgøta 10, 100 Tórshavn
Who’s not dreaming of a Kitsch Christmas sometimes? Cute and vintage-inspired Christmas kitsch can be best found at Maria Poulsen Búnýti. The store is recommendable to everyone who has a heart for Christmas decorations. After visiting the store, you can’t help but find yourself in the perfect Christmas mood.

Mikkalina Glas, Niels Finsensgøta 32, 100 Tórshavn
Mikkalina Glas is the business of glass artist Mikkalina Norðberg. She has recently opened her own store in central Tórshavn which is fun to visit. Mikkalina Glas is colourful, funny and different – that’s why I like it. I recently got a new pair of earrings that I love to wear.
Tutl, Niels Finsensgøta 9c, 100 Tórshavn
Tutl is the leading record label in the Faroe Islands. It was founded in 1977 by the Danish jazz musician and composer Kristian Blak. At the Tutl store you can find a huge collection of Faroese music. It’s fun for me to go there as I love to add Faroese vinyls to my collection. And it’s definitely not difficult to find some Christmas presents there too.
Christmas time is great in the Faroe Islands. So if you’re trying to find something really special for your loved ones, make sure to visit our colourful capital city Tórshavn. It’s just a short flight away from Denmark and Iceland! You can find more information on www.visitfaroeislands.com and www.visittorshavn.fo. And make sure to also check out HULDA’s Facebook site.
